To present any piece of writing on the occasion of Justin Nalley’s Confession is to risk the delicate balance of clarity and obfuscation at play here. Over the past months, we’ve discussed various entry points into this work—the lyric I and the universal self, mark making as a means of recording labor and life, ritual and dependency, cardioid geometry. I’ve seen the process, and it’s something like prayer but not, devotion curling in on itself. It felt private, so I left him there.
